Statements and Celebrations!
“Why do you go away? So that you can come back. So that you can see the place you came from with new eyes and extra colors. And the people there see you differently, too. Coming back to where you started is not the same as never leaving.”
― Terry Pratchett, A Hat Full of Sky
Hello again!
I must say I have been doing an ok job of making sure that I blog at least once every few weeks. The worst thing is having too much time go by and then having to catch up or forget whats happened!
Well lets see here, the past few weeks I've been putting a lot of work into helping draft our organization's official statements to the UN's upcoming convenings on the Commission on the Status of Women and the Commission on Population and Development. It has been super fun to be a part of the collaboration and to know that some of my words (even if just a few) will be read by global leaders and might make a difference somehow. I was very intimidated when I started contributing to these statements but later found out that they are supposed to be written in a very readable format, and my words were able to fit right in. It is so fulfilling to write and not just administrate. I am really getting some good experience and sharpening my professional writing skillz.
This past week my roommate was out of town so it was my first test in navigating Dar solo, I think I did a pretty good job. Most evenings I stayed at home and worked on some upcoming fellowship applications, I had some most necessary down time watching Netflix!
This past weekend was filled with fun and excitement though. I'm so glad the community of travelers is so close. I got invited to two parties this weekend and was exhausted after two nights of socializing and dancing and drinking. I got to check out a few new areas of town and experience my first Tanzanian night club. It's like any other club really, dark and loud with its fair share of creepers but I managed ok. I also got invited to a house get together at a fancy diplomat's house. It was so nice as one gal was house sitting and we got to use the pool and enjoy the nice garden at a super fancy house on the "peninsula", the fancy part of town :)
I'm meeting some really nice people, everyone is here for different reasons and its interesting to hear why. A lot of people working for development agencies and conducting internships like me! Good networking that's for sure.
I'm getting ready to host a fellow classmate of mine for one week--pretty exciting and somewhat random. She's doing her practicum in Kenya and the school has advised her to leave the country during the time of the upcoming elections. There is some political unrest due to the elections so yes hopefully nothing happens during that time! Despite the circumstances, I'm excited to host her and I think we'll go to Zanzibar for the upcoming weekend. More on that later :)
Well this is a relatively short post but I know that after I get done with some of these applications I'll be able to go and explore for fun. So until then!
